The Pennyman Club was unlike most in New York with its 1940’s charm. The outside was brick with two large windows on the side and front with crimson awnings over top, each reading Pennyman Club. The curb appeal was so inviting for passer-byers it was hard to refuse the offer, especially with the snowfall picking back up.

Not a bad idea, thought Knight, especially after having dealt with newbie uniforms for the past hour and a half, giving statements on why two vehicles tried to give a restaurant a new drive-thru window. The dashcam footage helped clear things up and get a BOLO (be on the lookout) out on the mysterious MIB’s. What it didn’t explain was the same thing Knight was wondering, why were they after the detectives in the first place? Knight told the rookie when he knew, they’d know. The wet behind the ears smart-ass newbie wasn’t happy to be shown up by some ‘hair-brained PI’, but with Knight’s experience he had the kid on the ropes and put the final nail in the coffin when saying “make sure not to use crayon when filling out the report.”

Brooks laughed at that one all the way to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. He was there to drop off the pill found in Brandon Andrew’s apartment. Lexi Rogers informed them it would be a while before she got the report back on what exactly the pill was but if they wanted to wait, they were more than welcome. Rick made an excuse to cut out in hopes Ian would finally grow a pair and ask her out. Given his track record however, it had a better chance of spontaneously turning a hundred degrees outside than Ian getting around himself to take the plunge. Besides, Rick needed an excuse to make the delivery for Luther Drake. And with his partner occupied it was the perfect time, after meeting with Sal Cristalo, of course.

Walking inside the Pennyman Club transported Knight into the 1940’s with its radiant ambiance of gangster era feel. Dozens of framed pictures clung to the upper walls and circled the bar, housing everyone from Humphry Bogart to Mel Torme to Bing Crosby, and even Al Capone. The interior was supported by visible beams and crossed boards for the ceiling. The horseshoe bar was finely polished and met onlookers walking in. The shelves behind the bar were stacked with every form of alcohol known to man with several forms of whisky on the top shelf by the mirrored backwall. Crimson covered stools wrapped around the bar while booths lined the walls. The middle of the floor was mostly open aside from a few tables here and there with cloths to match the stools.

Knight could only imagine some of the back-alley deals that went down in that place. He could see Capone and Bugsy sitting in a back booth describing how they fooled the cops and pulled off a bank robbery. Or how they discussed how a traitor in their midst would soon be wearing cement shoes in the middle of the Hudson.
